Now in it’s 46th year, the City 2 Surf is the world’s largest fun run. From Hyde Park in the centre of Sydney, the race is 14km long, winding through Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, often alongside the iconic Sydney Harbour, up the grueling Heartbreak Hill (2km of steady incline near the halfway point) and finishes at one of the city’s most recognisable destinations, Bondi Beach. Basically, Sydney took the Bay to Breakers idea from San Francisco and pumped it up.
The event had humble beginnings. Then, it exploded. There were at least 79,732 entries in 2017 – I know, because that was my bib number – and the 80,000+ runners, joggers and walkers makes the City 2 Surf the world’s largest run/walk…and probably the most spectacular one, too.
In past years, I’ve run the 14km distance, but walked it with friends this time around, which gave me time to snap some great photos.
