I’ve been to San Francisco a half-dozen times in my life and it’s one of my Top 5 favourite cities in America.
One of the best things you can do there is hire a bike from Fisherman’s Wharf and ride down to the Bay Bridge before heading back, through Fisherman’s Wharf and up to the Golden Gate Bridge.
A 15-minute slog and you’re on the bridge itself, which has a fantastic cycle way, up the Bay and across the Golden Gate Bridge. From the far side, you can either had back the way you came or do what I prefer: ride down to the tiny village of Sausalito (where there are some great restaurants and bars, as I discovered on a previous visit) and catch the ferry back across the Bay to complete the round trip. The ferry takes you close by Alcatraz Island and provides stunning views of downtown San Francisco. You know, the kind that make taking a bad photo basically impossible.
Doing the ride at sunset makes it even more spectacular. It was one of those moments where it’s exhilarating to be alive!
