America 2018: Day Ten (1 September)

She’s got Brazilian leather boots on the pedal of her German car
Listen to the Beatles singing back in the USSR
Yeah she’s goin around the world tonight
But she ain’t leavin’ here
She’s just going to meet her boyfriend down at the street fair

It’s a French kiss, Italian ice
Spanish moss in the moonlight
Just another American Saturday night

There’s a big toga party tonight down at Delta Chi
They’ve got Canadian bacon on their pizza pie
They’ve got a cooler full of cold Coronas and Amstel light
It’s like were all livin’ in a big ol’ cup
Just fire up the blender, mix it all up

It’s a French kiss, Italian ice
Margaritas in the moonlight
Just another American Saturday night

Saturday 1 September

So we didn’t get in until about 12:30am this morning so I didn’t wake up until 9:00am. Felt pretty good, considering how much I’d had to drink. We left pretty much immediately to go to the Longhini’s house for a late breakfast.

Finally, I got to meet Connor! You know, I think he was happy to see me. Especially after I gave him a present. Pretty sure he’s the only kid rocking the Sydney Swans doll in Wheaton, Illinois. (Until Graham gets one later this weekend, anyway). The amusing thing is that Connor was far more interested in the wrapping paper and the tags. Anyway, we got some good photos, and he was wearing the Swans Cookie Monster bib as well. Happy days!

We had breakfast at Egg Harbor in downtown Wheaton, which, ironically, was where we first found out, last summer, that Connor was coming! Good food (I had the San Antonio Skillet and some pancakes on the side) and really great company. Actually, the atmosphere in there was fantastic. Lots of happy people enjoying themselves on a pretty nice Saturday morning in the Midwest.

After breakfast, we hung out at bit at Longhini HQ where I quizzed Will on about 200 different Aussie slang terms I found on a website. Some of them, he was way off, but on others he did a pretty good job. I must admit that some of these terms I’d never heard of. And it also made me realise how much swearing we have in our vocabulary – at least based on that list!

Honorary members of the Weller clan!

College football started this weekend and I had a brief window in the afternoon to watch some of the games before we went to Top Golf with the Weller’s. Now look, the whole experience of being at a driving range where they serve you beer and food and play loud music was fantastic (I can see why the concept is taking off back home) but my first attempt at swinging a gold club was…well, let’s just say it was less than fantastic and leave it at that. I feel like I got marginally better as the afternoon went on, but I was working from a very low base. Fantastic fun, though!

Dinner at the Weller’s tonight – Mike and Jane came around with Bri and Scott’s parents, Jerry and Donna (or Babu and Tutu) to make a big, fun, loud crowd. More football: watched a bit of Michigan vs. Notre Dame outside, watched some IU vs FIU inside. Kristina made amazing lemon chicken with pasta and a beautiful almond cake which became the centrepiece of another celebration of Nathan’s birthday. This guy, he’s milking it for all it’s worth!

Ended the night playing Cards Against Humanity with Scott and Kristina. A lot of laughs on a great night.
