America 2025 – Day Thirteen

Tuesday 27 May 2025

Cool and cloudy in the Chicago suburbs. I’ve mentioned this previously, but it’s certain now: this is the strangest weather trip I can remember. The last few years, the weather has been hot and sunny – almost too hot in some places – but we’ve had maybe two days where I’ve worn shorts.

We are looking at going to the Cubs game tomorrow downtown at Wrigley Field. Thanks to the strange lakefront weather patterns, it’s looking like being about 14 degrees Celsius for the first pitch, and only getting colder after that. It’s actually colder here than in Sydney, where it’s winter, which is pretty wild.

At least we haven’t had much rain. That’s something to be happy about.

Didn’t really do much today. After a few busy days, it was nice to have a long sleep-in and not have an alarm set. It’s funny, although I got about eight hours’ sleep each night down in Indianapolis, I never woke up feeling completely rested. Unlike this morning.

Went for a run in the cloudy, cool morning and came via the nearby supermarket to buy some laundry detergent. If there’s one thing I have neglected so far this trip because we’ve been so busy, it’s laundry. All good now, though. I have clean everything, and good to go for the last week of the trip.

Side note: another American visit that has flown by. Feels like just yesterday we were landing, delayed, into Los Angeles and now we are into single digits of days left.

Kat went to the nearby outlets to do some shopping around lunchtime, but I stayed at the Airbnb. There wasn’t anything that I needed, and I also didn’t want to be tempted into buying stuff that I probably don’t really need. (I’ve been guilty of that before – those places are a trap!)

In the afternoon, we went over to Scott and Kristina’s. It’s annually one of the best nights of the trip, with lots of food, drink, laughter and photos. We happened to hear the Wheaton-famous Wheaton Dad Band (which Scott ‘manages’) rehearsing a few doors down and went down there to watch them play a few songs – “Learn to Fly” by the Foo Fighters, “Summer of ’69” by Bryan Adams and “Rock and Roll All Nite” from KISS. They were rehearsing for a slot at the Cream of Wheaton festival the weekend after next, and are sounding awesome.

Great to see Scott’s parents Babu and Tutu aka Jerry and Donna, who we missed last year. We ended up chatting until after 11:00pm about many and varied topics.

A fun night with great friends – the Weller’s are the best. It’s nights like these that keep me coming back year after year.
