America 2025 – Day Six

Tuesday 20 May 2025

It rained last night – a lot. Somewhere around 3 inches through the early hours of the morning. It was sunny and drying rapidly when I woke up, but there was evidence of the wild weather in Tower Grove Park, where I went for a run, with large parts of the grasslands in that park underwater. Other parts of the Midwest had even worse weather than we did.

Nathan was feeling a bit under the weather this morning, so it was a slow one. However, after a restorative Starbucks, we headed out in the afternoon to the nearby – and spectacular – Missouri Botanical Gardens. Aside from the plants and trees that you would expect, there are some beautiful and historical buildings that are well worth looking at.

Making things even better? The sun was out, and the temperature was perfect. Thinking back, today was probably the best weather day we’ve had so far.

Later in the afternoon, we went downtown to Busch Stadium, home of one of the most successful Major League Baseball teams in history, the St Louis Cardinals, who tonight played the Detroit Tigers. We met Matt, Jaimie and most of the Alley kids for an early Italian dinner at Katie’s Pizza and Pasta, literally right across the street from the ballpark. The spaghetti and meatballs, as recommended by Matt, were brilliant.

We had just enough time to finish dinner and get into the ballpark before the 6:45pm pitch. It was a perfect night for baseball, the kind you see on advertisements for the game, and we had good seats in the outfield, right near the foul pole. No complaints about that!

The game was actually really good. For the record, the Tigers won 5-4 in the final inning after the Cardinals roared back to tie the game after a very slow start. But the best part was seeing Matt and Jaimie’s daughter Paige singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the fabled seventh inning stretch.

Fun night and day in the Lou. Home by ten o’clock and ready for a good sleep – what else is new? – and off to Indianapolis tomorrow. Sunday’s 500-mile race is getting closer and closer…
