Young restless, in the heart land
Undecided, trying hard to understand
Bold rebels, faded glory, almighty dollar
Makin’ their demands
And all our hopes are ridin’
On every dream worth tryin’
And when we feel the lightning
And steal the thunder
Oh oh, never give in
The same desires, keep ’em burnin’
And as the fire, take on the heat
We walk through life, between love and heartache
Change with the times
American heartbeat
American heartbeat, yes it is

Wednesday 22 May
Another good sleep and 5km run as race day approaches. The weather remains…interesting. Probably a little too far out to gauge what happens on Sunday as far as potential delays, given things change very quickly with these Midwestern storms. Annoyingly, though, it seems like Friday, Saturday and Monday will be great, but Sunday is iffy. Of course…

Went downtown for lunch. Parked a little out of the heart of the city, and walked along the Indianapolis Canal and back, a little over 6km return, which was great. Downtown was quite busy, especially around the iconic J.W. Marriott (dressed for the occasion!) with a few road closures as people set up for Saturday afternoon’s Indianapolis 500 driver’s parade, which takes in the iconic Monument Circle (home to the impressive Soldiers & Sailors Monument) and some other downtown streets, a lot of which have temporarily had their regular street signs removed and replaced with driver’s names. So you can wander down Newgarden Street, turn left onto Dixon Avenue and head back up Power Street, if you so choose. Just one of the cool things they do downtown, in this city that embraces the Indianapolis 500 so completely.

Late in the afternoon, we headed out to Indianapolis International Airport to pick up one of my old CC friends Elias, who works now in Washington D.C. and has been in the country for the last two years. Not having ever seen a race in his life, or a racetrack for that matter, he nonetheless jumped on a plane because I have, for years, been telling him – and, really, anyone else who’ll listen – what a brilliant event the Indianapolis 500 is. So here he is, ready for his first ever racetrack experience. I can confidently say he won’t see a bigger race, but I really do hope what we see on raceday (whenever that may be!) lives up to my hype. He’s certainly going to get to meet some cool people this week.
Starting tomorrow…
