Over on the “other side” of the Kosciuszko National Park (think Tumut, Talbingo and Yarrangobilly rather than Cooma, Jindabyne, Perisher and Thredbo) is Long Plain Road, a meandering dirt road that – as you might gather from it’s name – follows Long Plain all the way to Blue Waterholes, and has been known as a good spot to see brumbies in the wild…although the closest we came to seeing brumbies was their droppings on the road.
Between Blue Waterholes and Cooleman Mountain campground is the historic Coolamine Homestead, dating back more than a hundred years to the 1880’s. The entire property has been spectacularly restored, and is just a short walk from the carpark. If you enjoy our history as much as I do, Coolamine Homestead is well worth a visit. (But not between 4 April and 4 October 2024, when Long Plain Road will be closed for feral pest control operations, which is code for brumby culling).
