It has become tradition to go away for Mother’s Day Weekend.
We’ve been doing it for a dozen years or so, visiting some old favourites and some new places – Canberra, Sofala, Kiama, the Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands – and this year we headed west out through Bathurst and on to Parkes in the Central West of NSW after seeing some articles in the travel section of the newspaper.
Most famous for the radio satellite dish that played a large role in the NASA moon landing and an even larger role in the classic Australian film “The Dish” (if you haven’t seen it, you really should because it’s brilliant – we watched it at Parkes, the night before our drive out to the real thing), there is a lot of history and spectacular countryside in the district.
We booked a nice Airbnb house on the outskirts of a town that I would suggest is equally as famous for the Elvis festival, for being named in honour of Sir Henry Parkes, the architect of Federation in Australia and for being home to the satellite dish that helped beam live pictures of Neil Armstrong’s moon walk around the world. All in all, it’s a fascinating place with a diverse range of things to see and do.
